2. Description of the traits and characteristics which have been introduced or modified, including marker genes and previous modifications:
New genes were introduced into the genetically modified DAS-59122-7 maize (referred to as 59122 maize) so that it can fight against the damages caused by certain Coleopteran insect pests, such as Western corn rootworm (Diabrotica virgifera virgifera)

The genes introduced in 59122 maize are maize-optimized versions of cry34Ab1 and cry35Ab1 genes from the soil bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis strain PS149B1, providing resistance to certain Coleopteran insects

DAS-59122-7 maize was genetically modified using Agrobacterium transformation method.

Environmental Impact and Risk Management

Summary of the potential environmental impact from the release of the GMPts:

The possible environmental impacts are the objective of the release. Increased selective advantage of the GMPt is not expected

Brief description of any measures taken for the management of risks:
Reproductively compatible plants (with the exception of experimental subjects to be planted in pollen drift experiments) are not present in several kilometer distances. Pollen dispersion is avoided by 6 border rows of non-GM maize. Seed dispersal is avoided by manual harvest. Vegetative parts are collected from the field or ploughed into the soil at the end of the release period. Experimental plots are protected by a fence during and one year beyond release.

Summary of foreseen field trial studies focused to gain new data on environmental and human health impact from the release:
The experimental release is intended to (a) follow Cry34Ab1/Cry34Ab1 toxin production and decomposition, (b) assess possible effects on non-target organisms, (c) evaluate the effects of environmental and agrotechnological conditions on biomass and Cry34Ab1/Cry35Ab1 toxin production.
