The transgenic plants carry the selectable marker nptII and a gene coding for a spider silk-elastin fusion protein.

In addition to sequences of the vector pCB 301 transgenic plants carry the genes coding for a spider silk protein, a elastin-like peptide, the CaMV35S promoter, the legumin B4 signal peptide from Vicia faba, the cmyc-tag, the KDEL coding sequence, the CaMV-35S terminator, the nptII gene from E.coli under control of the nopalin synthase promoter from A. tumefaciens and the nos terminator.

The genetic modification was brought about by Agrobacterium-mediated gene transfer.

Experimental Release

1. Purpose of the release:
Evaluation of the gm potatoes as bioreactors for the production of spider silk proteins.

2. Geographical location of the site:
The field release will be at the IPK Gatersleben in Gatersleben, Saxony-Anhalt

3. Size of the site (m2):
100 m2 in 2003, 500 m2 in 2004

4. Relevant data regarding previous releases carried out with the same GM-plant, if any, specifically related to the potential environmental and human health impacts from the release:

Environmental Impact and Risk Management

Summary of the potential environmental impact from the release of the GMPts:
Due to the absence of sexual compatible wild species and in the light of the modification carried out, no obvious environmental risks can be seen.

Brief description of any measures taken for the management of risks:
The release site will be monitored during and after the release. Potato plants not intended to be used for experimental purposes will not be grown in the vicinity of the release site.
