Title of the Project
Transgenic flax deliberate release

Proposed period of release:
15/04/2013 to 31/12/2016

Name of the Institute(s) or Company(ies)
Wroclaw University Of Environmental and Life Sciences, ;

3. Is the same GMPt release planned elsewhere in the Community?
No

Has the same GMPt been notified elsewhere by the same notifier?
No

Genetically modified plant

Complete name of the recipient or parental plant(s)
Common NameFamily NameGenusSpeciesSubspeciesCultivar/breeding line
flaxlinaceaelinumlinum usitatissimumNike

2. Description of the traits and characteristics which have been introduced or modified, including marker genes and previous modifications:
Improvement of thermoplastic properties and elasticity of flax fibres. Increasing of antioxidant capacity of flaxseeds. Improved resistance to Fusarium pathogens.

Genetic modification

3. Type of genetic modification:
Insertion; Other;
Other
Bacterial genes of polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) biosynthesis pathway and gene encoding enzyme which hydrolyzes the β-1,3-glucans

In case of insertion of genetic material, give the source and intended function of each constituent fragment of the region to be inserted:
Genes encoding -ketothiolase (phb A), acetoacetyl-CoA reductase (phb B) and PHB synthase (phb C)-enzymes of PHB biosynthesis pathway; genes derived from Ralstonia eutropha.
Gene for β-1,3-glucanase was isolated from Solanum tuberosum.

6. Brief description of the method used for the genetic modification:
The explants of flax hypocotyls and cotyledons were transformed by incubation with suspension of recombined Agrobacterium tumefaciens.

7. If the recipient or parental plant is a forest tree species, describe ways and extent of dissemination and specific factors affecting dissemination:
Not concerned

Experimental Release

1. Purpose of the release:
The aim of the project is verification of genetically improved transgenic plants properties in field trial; generated plants were enriched in biodegradable plastic (polyhydroxybutyrate). The goal is also to verify in field trial transgenic plants with properties of high resistance to pathogen infection (with overexpression of β-1,3-glucanase) and higher antioxidant capacity.

2. Geographical location of the site:
Wroclaw –Pawłowice; Ramiszów.plot. Nr 140/51 (WRIE 0040107/6); 893/3 (WRIE 0040107/6); 893/4 (WRIE 0040107/6), ground belonging to Wroclaw University of Environmental and Life Sciences

3. Size of the site (m2):
2500 m2

4. Relevant data regarding previous releases carried out with the same GM-plant, if any, specifically related to the potential environmental and human health impacts from the release:
The performed previous releasing took place on another experimental field (Wroclaw –Pawłowice; Ramiszów.plot. Nr 140/51 (WRIE 0040107/6); 893/3 (WRIE 0040107/6); 893/4 (WRIE 0040107/6), ground belonging to Wroclaw University of Environmental and Life Sciences )
and no uncontrolled spread over of GMO was observed and also another disadvantageous changes in environment were not notified.

Environmental Impact and Risk Management

Summary of the potential environmental impact from the release of the GMPts:
Transgenic flax containing polyhydroxybutyrate has changed thermoplastic properties, which leads to improvement of fibre quality. Expression of β-1,3-glucanase resulted in 3-fold higher resistance to Fusarium pathogens.
Obtained transgenic plants can not have selective dominance in natural environment.

Brief description of any measures taken for the management of risks:
During experiment the GMO trials will be controlled every week. The field during one year after experiment accomplished, at least once per month will be monitored. In case of any negative influence on natural environment the cultivation will be destroyed by herbicide treatment.

Summary of foreseen field trial studies focused to gain new data on environmental and human health impact from the release:
We do not expect any influence on natural environment and human health, it is unexpected any consequence of release of transgenic plant to environment.
