2. Description of the traits and characteristics which have been introduced or modified, including marker genes and previous modifications:
New genes have been introduced into the genetically modified MON 810 maize so that it resists certain Lepidopteran insect pests, such as the European corn borer (Ostrinia nubilalis).

Maize line MON 810 was developed through a specific genetic modification to be resistant to the European corn borer (ECB; Ostrinia nubilalis). The novel variety produces a truncated version of the insecticidal protein, Cry1Ab, derived from Bacillus thuringiensis. Delta-endotoxins, such as the Cry1Ab protein expressed in MON 810, act by selectively binding to specific sites localized on the brush border midgut epithelium of susceptible insect species. Following binding, cation-specific pores are formed that disrupt midgut ion flow and thereby cause paralysis and death.

6. Brief description of the method used for the genetic modification:
Maize line MON 810 was produced by biolistic transformation of maize genotype Hi-II with a mixture of plasmid DNAs, PV-ZMBK07 and PV-ZMGT10. Both plasmids contained the nptII gene under the control of a bacterial promoter required for selection of bacteria containing either plasmid, and an origin of replication from a pUC plasmid (ori-pUC) required for replication of the plasmids in bacteria.

Environmental Impact and Risk Management

Summary of the potential environmental impact from the release of the GMPts:
Note especially if the introduced traits could directly or indirectly confer an increased selective advantage in natural environments; also explain any significant expected environmental benefits

The possible environmental impacts are the objective of the release. Increased selective advantage of the GMPt is not expected.


Brief description of any measures taken for the management of risks:
Reproductively compatible plants (with the exception of experimental subjects to be planted in pollen drift experiments) are not present in several kilometer distances. Pollen dispersion is avoided by 6 border rows of non-GM maize. Seed dispersal is avoided by manual harvest. Vegetative parts are collected from the field or ploughed into the soil at the end of the release period. Experimental plots are protected by a fence during and one year beyond release.

Summary of foreseen field trial studies focused to gain new data on environmental and human health impact from the release:
The experimental release is intended to (a) follow Cry1Ab toxin production and decomposition, (b) assess possible effects on non-target organisms, (c) evaluate the effects of environmental and agrotechnological conditions on biomass and Cry1Ab toxin production.
